Fertility Preservation

Hope for Future Parenthood for Cancer Patients

A program for information and treatment to preserve fertility for patients undergoing treatment for cancer and other medical therapies that may disrupt their fertility

Cancer will affect approximately 1 in 50 women and 1 in 70 men by the time they reach their 39th birthday. Similarly, 1 in 500 children will also be diagnosed with a form of childhood cancer. Fortunately, advances in cancer treatment have increased survival in all of these patients. Today, early cancer detection and multimodal treatment with surgery, chemotherapy and radiation have improved the quality of life for cancer patients. Being able to look to a future beyond cancer also prompts these patients and their parents to ask the question, “Will I be able to have a family after my cancer treatment?” Fortunately, new cancer treatment options and advanced reproductive technologies offer all cancer patients the hope of fertility preservation. Often combined intervention by the patient’s primary physician/oncologist and a fertility specialist offers men, women and children the chance to be a cancer survivor AND a parent.

The first step to fertility preservation is information.

We treat many different types of patients. Our Center treats all patient who are faced with the use of chemotherapy, radiation, or surgery that may alter their fertility, whether they have a diagnosis of cancer or other life-altering disease. Children, adolescents, and their parents often benefit from hearing the effect of treatment on reproductive organs and the availability of fertility-sparing treatment. In addition, hormone replacement therapy may be beneficial to promote more normal reproductive health. Adult survivors of childhood cancer often talk about the types of fertility treatment available to help them become a parent today. Adult men and women may need to hear how they can preserve their current fertility, and treatments to look to in the future.  Dr. Rinehart is always available for consultation about fertility-saving possibilities for you or your child in light of the planned or completed cancer treatment.

Our Center offers the following services for fertility preservation:

  • IVF and embryo freezing
  • ovarian tissue freezing
  • egg freezing
  • testicular tissue aspiration and freezing
  • sperm freezing

  • donor sperm treatment
  • gestational host treatment
  • hormonal replacement

The second step to fertility preservation is a personal decision.

Fertility preservation must be considered along with your cancer treatment and your overall health. We recommend that you discuss pre-treatment and post-treatment options with us and your primary doctor to help you make the best decision for you. Please call us for a consultation. Together we may be able to make a difference in your life…and in your future fertility.
